Turkey August 1999

An earthquake of 7.4 degree in Richter’s scale hit Turkey on 17 August 1999 at 3 a.m. Towns of Izmit and Gölcük, situated in epicentre of the earthquake, were the most affected. First information mentioned up to 40,000 casualties.
Rescuing of people from collapsed buildings and further assistance to afflicted people (continuous survey in collapsed buildings, different assistance based on requests etc.) were the main intervention activities in disaster area. The Czech Republic sent ton disaster area four groups, 35 rescuers in total.

After finishing search and rescue operations, 14,000 people in the affected area were declared dead.
